Our Investigation

Who pays for the research that supports pet supplement claims? Our research desk analyzed funding disclosures, author affiliations, and conflict-of-interest statements across 150 peer-reviewed publications on canine probiotics, prebiotics, and digestive supplements published between 2015 and 2025.

The short version: the people selling the products are also paying to test them. Roughly half of the literature we reviewed carried money from a manufacturer or a trade group. That is not a scandal on its own. It is, however, a conflict of interest baked into the foundation of the evidence base — and it changes how you should read every glowing abstract.

Key Finding: Industry-funded research is not inherently invalid, but the funding source creates measurable bias in study design, outcome selection, and result interpretation. Consumers who do not check funding sources are evaluating a curated evidence base.

The Publication Bias Problem

Here is the number that should make you uncomfortable. Among the studies that disclosed industry funding, 82% reported a positive result[1] for the sponsor’s own product. Among independently funded studies, the figure was 54%[2] — much closer to what you would expect from a mixed, honest evidence base. Two bodies of literature, studying much the same things, reaching suspiciously different conclusions depending on who signed the checks.

We are not claiming these studies are fraudulent. There are innocent explanations — negative results get shelved and never submitted, sponsors quietly design trials that are likelier to succeed, and some products genuinely work. But the pattern is consistent, it is measurable, and it points in exactly one direction.

Conflict of Interest Patterns

The “Independent Researcher” Pattern

We saw the same arrangement so often it started to look like a template. A respected university professor runs the trial. The money, though, comes from a company grant. On paper the professor is independent — and often genuinely believes they are. But the funder picked the research question, supplied the product, and in several cases helped shape the design. What lands in the journal carries the university’s credibility while quietly serving a commercial interest. The byline says academia. The bank account says otherwise.

Conference and Symposium Sponsorship

Major veterinary nutrition conferences are heavily sponsored by supplement and pet food companies. While sponsorship does not directly control content, it shapes which topics receive attention, which researchers receive travel funding, and which findings receive prominent presentation slots.

Case Studies

Case Study: The Probiotic Efficacy Trial

A 2022 study published in a veterinary journal concluded that a specific probiotic blend “significantly improved fecal quality scores in dogs with chronic GI signs.” Our analysis of the disclosure statement revealed:

  • Funding: provided entirely by the product manufacturer
  • Study design: determined by the manufacturer’s research team
  • Product: provided by the manufacturer (no independent sourcing)
  • Statistical analysis: performed by a manufacturer employee
  • Three of five authors: employed by or consulting for the manufacturer

The study was never retracted. It may well be sound science. But read the abstract on its own and you would never know you were looking at a company grading its own homework, with academic co-authors lending the whole thing a borrowed authority. The disclosure statement tells the real story. Almost nobody reads the disclosure statement.

Case Study: The Negative Result That Was Not Published

Through interviews with two veterinary researchers (who requested anonymity), we learned of a university-conducted trial funded by a supplement company that found no significant benefit of the company’s product over placebo. According to our sources, the company exercised a contractual right to suppress publication. The study never appeared in any journal.

This practice — while legal under many research funding agreements — means the published literature systematically overstates efficacy by excluding negative findings.

How to Evaluate Research Funding

  1. Check the funding statement: Every legitimate journal requires one[1]. If it says “funded by [Brand X],” factor that into your evaluation.
  2. Check author affiliations: Authors employed by the product company have a financial interest in positive results.
  3. Look for independent replication: A finding replicated by non-industry researchers is more credible[4] than one reported only by the sponsor.
  4. Consider the totality: One industry-funded positive study is weak evidence[5]. Multiple independent studies showing the same result is strong evidence.

Who actually third-party tests?
